Letter of interest:

I am applying for the site-specific public artworks for the Capitol Stairs between Sonoma Boulevard and Sutter Street, in Vallejo, California.

This application and letter of interest is to provide a basis to demonstrate my qualifications and commitment to mosaic art work. For most of my life I have been an artist. I have been trained extensively in the most prestigious mosaic schools in Italy. For the last twenty-three years, I have created world-class mosaic art for public art works, private commissions and galleries in both the United States and Europe.

Although my home is Rome, Italy where I also maintain my studio, I travel extensively. My mosaic artwork and skill has allowed me the privilege to create new works, restore ancient mosaics, and speak at numerous mosaic functions worldwide.

California is one of my favorite places to work and visit. I have had the opportunity to work in this beautiful state many times. Some of the projects I have completed in California include restoration of a mosaic floor in the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles; a three panel mosaic for a private residence in Rancho Palos Verdes; and most recently a mosaic mural at St. Peter’s Italian Catholic Church in Los Angeles. This last work was highly received and I was honored by the State of California with a Certificate of Recognition from State Senator Kevin De Leon. For this reason I feel a special connection and particular kinship to the State of California. Truly, it would be a privilege to create beautiful art to grace the staircase in Vallejo.

If I am chosen for the first round of three applicants, I will work hard to demonstrate that my art will be created specifically for the space in Capitol Stairs as a reflection of the history, diversity and spirit of Vallejo. I am happy to incorporate any suggestions your committee has regarding the desired mosaic and I strive to accommodate all factors while building a completely unique and special design. It would be an honor to be selected to create this mosaic art. Also, I hope to show that my creative strengths in designing beautiful public mosaic art meet the standards of your committee and the City of Vallejo. My previous clients and public art commissions will attest to the quality of my art. I guarantee all of my art and will insure any work that is required by this proposal.

References for my work and my craft will be at your disposal upon request.

As requested I have completed the application and uploaded my resume, a list of public art commissions and pictures, as well as my educational background.

Thank you for your consideration of my proposal.

While fully aware of my lack of qualifications, I respectfully request the right to participate in this competition. I have a design concept for the steps that I’m capable of executing together with a team of professional, credentialed artists who have agreed to work on my concept should I be granted the opportunity. I believe my concept will be a valuable asset to the local community and to the city of Vallejo as a tourist attraction, and, beyond the qualities of beauty and decor, will become an important historical feature of interest for posterity.

I have no mosaic work to offer, but am an internationally published photographer, writer, poet and designer. Greetings!

Art creates interest in the eye of the beholder. It inspires imagination and creativity. The aesthetic value of art gives life to a once drab space.

I would like to share my talent in creating an awe-inspiring mosaic for the City of Vallejo.

The mediums I had used are acrylic, photography, pen and ink, silk screen printing and computer graphic applications.

The only experience I have with tile was when I laid it on the outdoor patio floor.

I currently live with an aunt in Glen Cove.

Please view my website at your convenience.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Druh Martines

My goal is to create an environment of beauty in a space that touches the soul of the public. I’m especially enthusiastic about this project because I want to contribute a piece of mosaic art with aesthetic appeal and meaning to the Bay area, where I live and thrive.

During the past nineteen years I’ve designed and executed large indoor/outdoor mosaic projects for public spaces, for kitchen and bathroom installations, and created a wide variety of mosaic wall art and sculptures. I”m trained in all manner of mosaic art from flat to three-dimensional, and am experienced with installation and overseeing installations.

My artistic aesthetic ranges from abstract to portraits to the whimsical to spiritual imagery. I’m comfortable working with committees. I enjoy creating art that fulfills the clients wishes.
I’ve worked with budgets up to $40,000.00 and I’ve always met my deadlines.

Throughout my artistic career, my experience in selling my artwork, teaching workshops, and working with the public and private clients has developed my listening skills. This is key to the success of design development. Hearing what the client is passionate about and interpreting it into a design can be a magical process. Ideas flow and appear, are worked with and made manifest. For me, it’s an exciting and rewarding journey.

If selected for this project, I would be prepared to present design proposals of colored drawings to scale, tile samples, and make it a priority to attend meetings and discussions. I make a point to complete assignments on schedule.

In conclusion, I have the artistic, technical and personal qualifications to excel at this project. I’m excited about the prospect of being involved in public art with cultural and historic significance, a gathering place for community.

thank you for your consideration,

Jane Kelly
